Tips to have a stress free Thanksgiving!

Tips to have a stress free Thanksgiving!

IMG_8430

So it’s that time of year where you are running around like a chicken with their head cut off, well at least I know I am.  This year, I added it up and we are attending our church Thanksgiving, our son’s preschool Thanksgiving, two family Thanksgivings, and not to mention our big Thanksgiving, and with that comes dishes I have to bring not to mention the grocery shopping, house cleaning, and also my everyday task!  But here are a few tips that I do every Thanksgiving to help me cruise along and actually get to enjoy Thanksgiving.

The first thing I do is decide what I’m going to make that day.  I first make a list, my list is broken down into categories ie. appetizers, side dishes, desserts.  I normally try to stick to the normal Thanksgiving foods I make every year because, one I have my time down to a science to make sure lunch is served at noon and second, I don’t want to try a new recipe and it turn into a disaster.  After I have my menu planned out, I start at the top of the menu and start my grocery list.  Making sure I have everything I need for the big day.  Even though I know I have it in my pantry, I go ahead and buy it because I don’t want to accidentally use the one in the pantry and then I’m scrambling the day before fighting over the last can of green beans on the shelf at the store!

The next thing I do is go grocery shopping the week before hand.  I do this separate from my weekly grocery store trip.  I have learned in the past that if you try to go to the store a few days before Thanksgiving Day, it is an all out war!  And the shelves are so bare that it looks like we are gearing up for a blizzard.   So to avoid all the chaos, I go the week before, (try to go the day your grocery store flier comes out to get the Thanksgiving sales).

A few days before Thanksgiving is when I deep clean.  My deep clean day is Monday anyways so that helps me get everything ready for the big day and I just ask my family to help me keep the house clean.  My husband knows I will go bat crap crazy that week so he really helps out that week, lol.

On Wednesday is my baking day.  I get all of my pies and other goodies baked that day. and if there is any dishes that can be made ahead of time I try to get made as well.  Also on Wednesday I gather all the dishes I will be cooking in and serving in.  This helps me in many ways.  One is so I don’t have to climb up to the attic the day of frantically looking for my gravy boat that I use one day a year and second so I don’t have to be washing the dust off while my mom is holding the pot of mashed potatoes.  I also place sticky notes on every dish so on the Thanksgiving day, my little helpers know which side goes into which dish.  Yes I’m that person.

Thanksgiving
To keep people out of the kitchen, have a few finger foods for them to snack on.

Wednesday evening we always have our out of town guest show up and so I always make a big pot of Chicken and Noodles.  That night always get my schedule wrote down.  I break it up in 15 minute increments so I know exactly what time to stick food into the oven and what time it needs to come out of the oven.

Thursday’s the big day and after I make a small breakfast, have at least a pot of coffee, and have showered its time to roll up my sleeves and do my thing.  Getting things prepared and thought of ahead of time makes things in the kitchen go so much smoother.

I will admit, at night I just want to lay around and be lazy.  But then I think about everything that I need to do the next day and I get right to picking up the house.

The first thing I do is wash my dishes from supper.  I try to keep my dishwasher unloaded during the day (it takes less than five minutes, I’ve timed myself) so loading the dishwasher is a snap.  It is always so nice to go to bed with a clean sink and kitchen.

The second thing I do is make sure nothing is in the washer.  This saves time in the long run because you don’t have to rewash those clothes.

Next, I spend about ten minutes or so cleaning off the dining table, picking up toys, and tiding up the living room.  It makes for an eaiser time the next day with chores.

Taking a few minutes out of my evening (I swear it is like thirty minutes if that) helps me the next day stay organized and on task!

2017 Fall Home Tour

It is defiently no surprise that I love fall.  I love everything thing about fall, the weather, the smells, the colors.  I start decorating for fall the first of September and keep it up all through Black Friday.  Here is a look at my fall decor this year.

I love pumpkins and these pumpkins are my favorite.

Mums are an easy way to add fall to your front porch and require little maintenance.

I could light a fire and stare at this fireplace all day.

I’m obsessed with this new Scentsy Pot.

A simple floral arrangement on my coffee table finishes up my living room.  I have to keep the coffee table simple because my toddler will wonder off with my decor.

I like to keep my table simple.  Orange chargers followed by my white plates just scream fall.  Adding a little plate with color on top brings all the fall colors together.

Keeping the centerpiece low helps with the conversation.

Five things I do every morning to be more productive and organized

Five things I do every morning to be more productive and organized

Lets be honest, life can sometimes get away with us and before we know it, it is the middle of the afternoon and we have run around the house all day like a chicken with their head cut off.  But here are a few things that I try to get done every morning to make my day go just a little smoother!

1.Make my bed!  This is a must for me for many reasons.  It only takes a few minutes (I normally make it while I am waiting for my hair straightener to warm up) and for me it just makes me feel like my room is clean and off to a good start.  Plus, who doesn’t love to crawl into a freshly made bed at the end of the night.

2. Make a To Do list – For me a to do list is an essential part of my day.  It helps me stay on track and remember what I need to do around the house, order online or an errand I have to run.  Plus when my husband is home and wants to help, it’s easier for him to know exactly what I need him to do.

3.  Unload the Dishwasher – I normally load the dishwasher at night so in the morning it is ready to be unloaded.  I do this when the boys are having breakfast and I have to be in the kitchen anyways.

4. Start a load of laundry – I am not one for piles of laundry sitting around the house, and I hate when you spend all day doing laundry.  For me doing one load of laundry helps cut down on those piles and also allows me do spend more time with my guys.

5. Spend twenty minutes tidying up the house – I normally do this one after I unload the dishwasher while the boys are eating.  Spending just a few minutes picking up toys, loading dishes, clearing off counters etc helps when it comes to the deep cleaning part of my day.

Dining Room Reveal

Something that I have always wanted was a dining room.  A place where my family sits and enjoys each other while we eat supper, a place where our extended families enjoy holidays and other celebrations together, a place where friends become family.  So when I finally got a dining room, I knew I had to have a big farmhouse table.

The dining room is the first thing you see when you walk into our home so I wanted to make it an inviting space for family and friends.

Dining RoomOf course, I had to add my Rae Dunn Pottery along with my pops of red through out.  At first I didn’t want a bench at my table, but I knew it would be nice for the boys to sit.  I am so glad I decided to go with the bench because it has been really handy.

Rustic Kitchen

They say the kitchen is the heart of the home and in my house they are defiently correct!  One of the big items on our list when we were looking for a new home was what did the kitchen look like.  And when I saw this kitchen I was in love.  With the tall cabinets to the huge island/bar area.  And the flow is great.

Something that was really important to me was to have a bar of some sort for my boys to sit and have breakfast when they are older.  Plus I have always wanted those bar stools.

Kitchen Sink

I love a clean sink!

I know some people don’t like anything on their counters, however, almost everything on my counters I use everyday in cooking so I find it easier to have them within arms reach.

I really enjoy the bookcase at the end of the island to house all of my cookbooks.

Although I did wish for a white kitchen in the new house, it is hard to find in small town Oklahoma.  All the house we looked at had the dark rustic cabinets.  And I do like how they look.

Bedroom Reveal

Hallelujah!!  I have my first room officially DONE!  With the exception of a bench for the footboard of our bed and I’m still trying to decide if I want one there or not.  In the new house I really went outside my comfort zone and went with a neutral color scheme.  But as I get older, my taste become more neutral.  I am loving the gray walls with all the gray and yellow accents.  However I still love my black furniture.

Gray & Yellow Bedroom

In my bedroom houses all of our cherished memories.  From our wedding photo’s to our boys on our nightstands.  I wanted to keep this space more about us.  The black shelves holds my wedding bouquet, pictures of my husband and I, bibles that are our family members that are no longer with us.  I felt that the master bedroom required a more intimate and personal touch where as the rest of the house is more about my kids.

Gray & Yellow Bedroom

The number one rule in my house is always make your bed when you wake up.

I wanted to keep my nightstand free of clutter with the exception of the book I’m reading and my guys!

Adding a few pops of color via the picture frames and vase help a neutral room.  The flowers give it a little feminine touch without going to girly.

Once again, my husbands nightstand is free from clutter.

Hello everyone in blog land.  I wanted to write a post telling a little about me.  I am a boy mom of two small boys (three and one) and we just moved into our forever home (well until we decide to build our dream home, but not really sure about the time line on that).  Over the next few months and into years, I will be sharing with you my house room by room as we get them fixed up, painted and decorated.  Also I will be sharing my organization and how I stay organized with two small children. I will be also sharing Friday Favorites, cleaning tips, and tride and true organizational tips.

A little about me.  I am an Oklahoman thru and thru.  I was born and raised here and honestly I couldn’t see me living any where else than Oklahoma.  My husband, boys and I just moved to a new town and life gets crazy.  I am a lover of farmhouse and rustic decor.  I also love antique pieces as well as my treasured family heirlooms.
